Eds Adventures- It seems there is a new mission for me to pursue in the Gulf of Mex with the oil spill. sea turtles amnd migrating and nesting shorebirds are in critical danger from this spill. It could be worse than Valdez. I still remember those images of brids being covered in oil and people trying to save them. I think that is my calling for the summer.
I am in contact with several orgs working in the affected areas and will decide where to go from here. I am in Phoenix with my family and enjoying it so much. It has been 4 years since I left Az and it feels wonderful to get back and see family and my favorite dog in the world. Emmy is my sisters and lived with my mom. Seeing her again at 11 and a bit slower but the same great personality brought tears to my eyes. I know she remembered me. There is now an addition and pal for Emmy. Wayne after Ft wayne is a rescue wire hair terrior mix and the most beautiful but homely looking guy. see pics on blog. We have been walking the last few days and having a ball together. Wayne is keeping Emmy young and is a wonderful addition to the family.
I will be heading back to the Chiricahua mtns and the Southwestern Research Station where my camper is parked. I was to volunteer their for the month of may but told them i would stay a week or so then needed to help out with the spill. they were very understanding so it should work out fine although i was really looking forward to spending the month in the mtns.
So the journey continues to call me in different directions from where I started but it is CLEAR where I want and need to be. The journey was about making a difference and there is no bigger need now.
Thanks so much for your e-mails and communication. It inspires me and means so much to have caring friends and family. See the great pics from Big Bend and Chiricahuas and Phoenix and will update when I find out future plans.
God Bless and thanks

Left Texas with a new appreciation for the beauty of the people and nature
Eds Adventures; April 25 and after 18 days and 9 rivers I left Tx and Big Bend yesterday and made my way back to Highway 10 after a week in the isolated back country of Big Bend. Wow is it big with 265 miles of Rio Grande river bringing the lifeblood of water to the region of harsh desert. To see the color green from a distance and know you must be getting close to the Rio Grande against the backdrop of the mountains with the desert color palletes of greys and all shades of brown from the dark volcanic rock of the mountains to the desert southwests shades of brown all of their own.
I went to Big bend last weekend driving to Amistad Nat recreation area to spend the night. I made it to the park HQ and came out to my car which would not open with my electronic key, the only way to open the car. My spare key was in the car and the park service spent 1 hr trying to get in with no luck because the car alarm went off and auto locked each time they tried opening. Anyway after a locksmith and $50 bucks and 3 hours later I went back to del Rio for batteries and then stayed in Lake Amistad at a primitive campground. I was so wiped out after the day and my tent was being held up by rocks and hoping it would not blow away in the wind. Still missing that tent pole. Put it on the list for a rv place.
Took off on Mon morning and headed 90 West toward Big Bend. My second camper tire blew. Both originals I am sure had dry rot. Hope the new ones work. Allen stopped righ away and helped me out. The tire was on passenger side and at a angle so difficult to get the jack and high enough to change the tire. Allen was a real blessing as I was struggling and about ready to call triple AAA except no phone service.
Allen is a retired horse shearer and one tough old texan with a heart of gold. he is disabled and I suspect much younger than he looks. What a tough life working with the horses and getting beat up every day. Also a life of freedom and the american dream. Allen had a wonderful wisdom and his son is 32 and in Iraq right now. He would not except any money and said he would never leave anyone stranded in West Tx. I told him I was all about paying it forward and would make sure I stopped and helped people along the way. What a blessing for God to bring him there for me in time of need.
Well it had been 24 hours and about 4 hrs of being stranded. I try not to question reasons and look at it as an opportunity to grow in patience and persaverance. I have lots of room to grow. Look out!!!
And Monday night made it to Big Bend HQ in the rain and went to Chisos basin camground. I was a mess and decided to to sleep in the car with the rain and my bad tent so ate a bite and layed the car seat back all the way with my sleeping bag and got a little sleep.
Tuesday I went back to Panther Junction HQ to get my mail. Wow three weeks with no mail. I met with Jane Brown Volunteer Coordinator. I had e-mailed to see if there were any projects I could volunteer for. The trail crew had Americorps group out but she gave me the name of Mike Ryan who is the River Ranger on the Rio Grande for 250 miles of patrol and conservation work with the Mexican Govt and their partners. I met with Mike and a volunteer couple who spend a few months each year helping shuttle park rangers around districts and do search and rescue, invasive species control and law enforcement. I interviewed Mike fo about 10 minutes before he got called away. He has been a river ranger for 20+ years and you could see his gentle and caring compassion for the National Park. Especially since it is a joint effort with Mexico to strenghten the partnership between countries in a so violent time of drug and mob wars on our borders and the issue of immigration. He is looking for volunteers for months of May and June to volunteer to do shuttles on the river. I really like and connected with him and am thinking that next year I may think hard about doing that. great experience in disatser relief, search and rescue skills. Keep it in mind. Did not get to see Mike again as he was going into thew field with Mexican partners to survey invasive species. I asked about a treip while I was there but could not with Mx group. I did not get to see Mike before I left but will e-mail from Tucson and let him know how great it was and to keep in touch for next year. I noticed he is a Universal Church Minister and thought what a gentle soul.
.
I just heard that Az govener cracked down on all illegals and will arrest them if they do not have papers. How crazy is that. Give the people a way to come in legally and they will. We need them so do not kid ourselves that they are taking jobs away from americans. I have never seen any american kids or adults in FL doing landscape or manual work in the summer time.
Mike talked about the wildlife and flora and fauna of this unique ecosystem. Big Bend has a number of ecosystems supporting a diverse variety of species. From the desert plants and succulants to the hardwood Junipers and oaks in the mountians. The desert is near sea level and the mountains reach 7500 feet. from 100 degrees in desert to 55 in mtn. I camped down in cottonwood on the rio grande and finally got my kayak in a river for the first time. It was not a long ride as current was swift and river shallow and rocky so had to pull it through a few times. I put in at Santa Elena canyon surrounded by giant srtone and rock formations out of the pleistocene period of dinasaurs. IN fact that are many exhibits and digs gloing on. Tx was a part of shallow seas that cover much of our continent during that period filled with all the terrible creatues of Jurassic Park. Not much good camping if humans were alive back then. The bears and mtn lions that are in the area today seem pretty tame in comparison. I spoke with Don who is the geologist and alkso archeologist about the formation of the area and its millions of years of history. How interesting to look at a different perspective of 100 million years instead of our limited understanding since man came around a couple of million years ago. We are all so very insignificant in the realm of time and space and yet we have this infinite loving God who gives us his spirit and calls us to reflect his spirit out on to this planet making a difference and fullfilling us beyond our human needs but to our Soul and connection to God. Through nature is one of the best ways to quiet the mind and let go of ego. I find a contentment most of the time when I just quit trying do too many things. Just sit and listen to all the sounds of birds, wind, and see the cactus in bloom and the mountains colors all vivid. The comes night and the sky show is beyond any fireworks. No light pollution anywhere and the clear nights brought billions of stars. It is easy to escape all the ugly reality of our country and be A Part Of Nature blending in with and nuturing it rather than controlling and abusing the resources so many go without. I have been conserving in a number of ways. Recycling bags and no shower for a week. Used about 4 gallons all week. Also eating a lot of veggies and fruit so not much meat or chicken. Loosing some weight after all these hikes.
I did the Lost Mines trail 6 miles RT and climbed about 1500 feet on Wed. It was part mtns so not too hot but very windy all days in Big Bend. There has been a siting of mother mtn lion and cubs in the area and was hoping to get a glimpse. It seems about 20-30 lions ahve been in this area for years. It seems the farmers and ranchers are the bigest threat to them. also bears just coming out of hibernation for the winter in the mtn area. Everything is bear proof.
Cottenwood Campground was very warm reacing 100 one day but breeze helped with bugs and comfort. The campground was unbelievable. The serious birders come to the campground and have their 500 MM lenses looking for the birds. They are a nice group around the camp and have chatted with most of the birders. It seems I found the best campsite with tres and a grassy area where we were visitied each day by a herd of javelina graziing. It was such a great site as you see the pics. The vermillion flycatcher red and grey and beautiful to wahtch it catch bugs in the fly right in front of me. Just amazing the evolution of species to survive with unique adaptations. We saw a grey hawk which is rae in US mostly Mx that has nested the past few years. All kinds of cardinals, verdents, western tanagers. Slowly learing names and got a nice briding card to help me.
Friday I hiked the chisos basin loop and the Leguna Meadow trail. about 10 miles and 1000 ft change in elevation. Staring to get in good shape. The trials are marked great and have had no problems which for me is REALLY BIG knowing my history with directions. Thanks holy spirit for guiding me. This is the area where the bear and mtn lions habitat is favored with a mix of desert and the turns into hradwood with Juniper, oaks, Az and Douglas fir which are very rare in this area. I was one of only a couple of people I saw all morning. So quiet and p;eaceful getting aborbed into the habitat. I could hear ther slightest sounds and bushes rumbling hoping to hear the low purring of kittens or sounds of a bear jsut far enough away to get pics. YEAH GET REAL ED, okay no sightings but a wonderful hike, and awesome day of hiking. Back to campsite in the afternoons to rest up and relax. It is about 30 miles to anything including gas or water so I had to plan ahead. I visited Rio Grande village on the river and checked out spot to put kayak but not really good kayaking river.
Tx has been awesome with perfect timing for spring bloom of desert and mtns and full of the wild nature. I have been =watching the Natl Parks videos oin my laptop as daily entertainment. It has been so interesting to see the history of the people and parks 150 years ago and today. There visions of the parks and how society and culture placed little thought or concern on something with no intrinsic value. They could see the reality of what would happen if not to save some of these treasures to give evryone the possibility of seeing who we were as a young nation growing in new ideas and values which are more important now than ever before. This economy and future of our country looks a lot like when FDR took office and decided the best way out of a reciession is to build infrastructure and to take care of our national treasures adding more and more parks the vision of Nat Parks. All across the globe countries hve found ways to save their treasure and benefit economically by saving instead of destroying the treasures for short term gains. I think Pres Obama should look at the parks with no budgets anymore and lacking in trails and maint. Back in the FDR days ihe found the way to give jobs to thise who would build roads, trails buildings bridges in our Natl parks and be able to send back money to famileis duriung the depression. As they interviewed these people many lives were changed and the parks became part of our culture and a legacy for generations to come. I think that idea would go over great right now. I would sign up in a heart beat. Oh well for my poniutifcations on our environment.
Well it is Sun morning in Motel 8 in Las Cruces NM. I had a shower and meal last night at Mx restaurant. I sure appreciate the simple things more now. Alos a bed that does not shake from 40 MPH gusts of wind. Great night sleep. Updating e-mail and pics etc this morning and on to S Az and coranado Nat forest south of Tucson for a few days and then to civilization and Richard and Tucson and Phoenix and family. It will be so great to spend time together with richard and David in tucson. Richards parish and courtyard are all finished and have not see it yet. Also can not wait to attend mass with Richard celebrating. I have been listening to his homilies at Corpus Christi parish near Saguaro Nat Monument. It gets kind of lonely after a while so it will be special to catch up with family and friends lives. It has been 4 years since I moved from Scottsdale and is great blessing to get back this year.

Still not to Big Bend
Eds Adventures: Well it has been almost a week in hill country. I moved to Lost Maple St Natural Area yesterday in the rain. Tough packing up and setting up the camper when wet. I did a hike on the east trail to the ponds for about 3 hours yesterday in a bit of rain. I am better prepared this time with gasrbage bag for my camelback pack and also good socks and taped up my blisters before I went. It was amzing the hummingbirds at the campsite. Blackchinned and rubythroated hummingbirds. Along with my first golden cheeked warbler. I spent about 30 minutes meditating to the sounds of water, birds and all of nature. Most of all the feeling of the spirit here has brought a peace patience and freedom I have never had. I had planned on being at Big Bend a week ago but finally just letting go and seeing where the Holy Spirit leads me.
It has been 5 days of rain and I spent Thursday at my first motel in Bandera, where I sit now doing my laundry with more drizzle. It was great to have a warm bed and shower and a nice cajon farm raised catfish for dinner. Once again I stumbled upon a river right behnd the hotel. & stops 7 different rivers.Tx sure has alot of beautiful rivers.
You will not believe it but Sue and Glenn are staying 10 miles away for their friend John Gibsons funeral and I am going to meet them here in Bandera this afternnoon. What are the odds of that in the middle of nowhere to get to see them. It will be awesome to see family.
I will not have access to e-mail or phone, txt at Lost Maple or most of the way to Big Bend. Verizon coverage is not so good out west I here. Go figure. More tech problems. Oh well i will check in when I can.
I am downloading some great pics from Lost Maple
Hope everyone is well and reply to comments section of the blog and let me know how you are doing?

Kerrville Pk Wed 4-14
Eds Adventures: It was rainy and cool so I drove around the hill country to Bandera, where Sue and Glen will be gong for a John Gibson's wake. Can you believe it I just happen to be in the same area about 20 miles away. I may be close enought to see them this weekend. I drove through Camp Verde, outpost from 1858 and the military tried using camels for traveling and communications did not work so much for them. Also the country roads wound around the medina river and looked like great places to kayak but most of all land is privately owned and fencing everywhere so would be difficult.
I stopped at a rv site and they told me that Lost Maple is a St Natural area with lots of hiking on 337 in Vanderpool on the Sabinal River 6th river of my trip. I hiked the east trail 4.8 miles with a 1.5 mile steep incline. I need to get more excersize as yesterday biking and today hiking is giving me the motovation to really get in shape, especially if I want to do some trail work. The views and hiking even in the rain were out of nthis world. You would never believe you are in Texas. I am amazed at the area and am going to stay at Lost Maple St Natural area from Thurs-Mon and continue the slow journey to Big Bend, Want to stay away on weeknds.
This area is in prime bird migration for goldend cheeked warbler, black cappedvireo, hummbirds, butterflies and Sat there is a bird watching guided tour at lost Maple by Les and his wife who I met today. They said the indigo warbler, and painted bunting have not arrived yet. Some of the bird populations are down from 2 year drought that killed off the birds that relay on this area for resting feeding and nesting before moving on. That and a cold winter where plants and flowers are blooming are late may be a cause but the golden cheeked warblers are here so hope top get some great viewing here.
I spoke with John Stewert 21 year veteran of Tx State park and wildlife and 4 years at Lost Maple. I did my first audio interview with a list of prepared questions about Ecosystem, flora fauna, natural resources, environmental impacts, funding staff conservatiuon projects. He spent about 20 minutes talking about the unique ecosystem where there is a mix of desert, succulants cactus and hardwoods along with a geology of 50 million year old limestone beds. The porous stone and erosion form springs that at lost maple show wate that tests 5-15 thousand years old and some of the cleanest and coldest water 50-60degrees when it is 100degrees outside. Wow what a great history and learning opportunity for me today. John was exactly the type of person needed in our parks. Hope to continue this everywhere I go.
What a good day although rainy and forcast looks like the same for several days. I tested my rain gear today Cabelas jacket held up well and was dry after 2 hours of hiking in drizzle. The LL Bean boots are great except I had on tennis lowcut socks and got a blister by the end. What a rookie mistake, but learned my lesson and have a pair of emergency socks, not to mention emergency kit water, and supplies in the car.
Hope to get some kayaking in on one of the many rivers around here but difficult access with roads, dams etc cutting through and rainy weather. Hope you enjoy some of the pics. ps: the birds are from pics inside the nature center but rest are the real thing. Hope to have my own pics of the birds by the weekend.
Hope everyone is doing well!! Please feel free to post comments and any abuse is welcome as I stumble my way through this adventure. Well it is getting late althoug my days are so filled with chores and activities but going to bed later as I write and read more now. I seem to only need about 6 hrs of sleep. Tonight may be my first night of rain on the camper. I may have to put in the ear plugs to sleep.
God Bless
Thanks for your support

Stephen Austin St Pk-4-7 to -4-12 Kerrville-Schreiner City Park 4-12 to 4-15
Eds Adventures: I finally left Stephen Austin St Pk west of Houston. Stayed 4 nights and had a great time. A golf course was less than a mile from my campsite so i spent some time there watching the Masters in the afternoons and eating some real food for the first time in a week. Got to walk 15 holes on Fri night with the deer and birds. Set up camper by myself for first time and closed it down. What a awesome win for Phil at the masters. Watched it with Amanda, bartender at the golf course and some of the regulars. Even got a few drinks free, someone got a hole in one. Sure was good timing as I thought I would not get to see any coverage. Especially with Phil my hero and his wife and kids there at the end. Do not see Tigers wife anywhere or his kids. Too Bad.
I met Tom the "Vagabond" who is the park host for the campsite. He was so helpful and great to talk to. Saved me hundreds at a RV shop. He did some archeology digs in Dinasaur Pk and was an engineer for GM. Sally, Ben and the staff at the park were outstanding and so nice. The state parks have been the best so far as close to the highway, good fascilities and all have been on a river. Sure hard to beat that. I spent sunday shopping and doing laundry at Holiday Inn while charging my equipment and even having a nice free breakfast. Sure helps to act like you know what you are doing or play dumb whatever works.
I left on Monday morning and headed west about 240 miles ot Kerrville Tx on Guadelupe River. It is a city park but has great trails for biking and I am going to try to get some kayaking in tomorrow. The birds have been unbelievable right at my campsite. Got the camper open in abouit 1.5 hrs this time so much better. I will head to Big Bend!!!! Finally after I thought that would be my first real stop. Too many other great places along the way and have no time committments.

First day on my own
Eds Adventures: Well the trip started great from Ocala and Larry's after getting the camper all packed up and loaded. Sure am learning a lot about campers and traveling. The first 140 miles were great until a camper tire bow-out on 1-10 around Tallahasse yesterday afternoon. Quite scary and stressfull but learned how toi change a camper tire the hard way., I finally made it to Pascaguala Missippi and Shepherd St Park last night.
I spent my firsdt night out under the stars on a presentation platform of wood with my pad and sleeping bag under the stars. Wow what a great night with no-one around except the Stars and moon and wilderness. This morning I hiked down to the river and saw a nice sunrise and found Allen and his wife who gave me coffee. Bugs are getting bad so I will pack it up and head toward Texas today.
Thak goodness for Larry Gibbons and all his help I would nevewr had made it. We had a great time and got to kayak the Ockawahala rive rand Silver Springs where we saw some nice gators and best of all we saw wild Magaub Monkeys that have populated the area after escaping from the Tarzan Movies back in the4 30's That was so great and got some niuce shots and film I will post.
Getting eatiung up by bugs so goit to go and head on the road.
Hope ofr an uneventful day of driving.

Journey Begins
Eds Adventures:The Journey Begins
Eds Adventures: I left with my camper on Thurs. It was the first time I had driven it at all with my car. Just a little nervous for the trip to Ocala but the car and camper handled well. My gas is about 13.8 MPG not tooo bad.
I got to Larry's and spent Thursday and friday mostly setting up and figuring out the systems. Lots of Technology and challenges each step of the way. I am such a slow learner but taking my time and having a good time with Larry.
We went biking on Fri-Sat at Carney park near his house. It is on Lake Weir and Little lake Weir. What a great area to live if retired. So cheap to buy as place close to the lake. I saw armadillo, wild turkey, and kingfishers byt the lake.
Well I am slowly learning all I need to survive out here camping. I plan on leaving Tuesday morning some time and head toward Big Bend Tx by Thursday or Friday and set up camp there for a few days.
I put some photos of the camper here at Larry's. What a great place, I may just stay here for the summer if the rent is right!!! Larry would probably be ready to kick me out but thank goodness for his expertise helping me out. He spent 6 months living in his VW Bus so he is laughing his head off with my luxury's. Mattress warmer for my bed. Lights, fan etc. ands all my gadgets.
